The Diapers & Wipes

PGD is made out of donated PUL (polyurethane) and anti-pill fleece material. The inserts (soakers) and cloth wipes are made out of cotton and/or flannel material that was gently-used (pajamas, shirts, blankets, etc.). They are sewn with 100% polyester thread and have a combination of snaps and Velcro on them. All packages of diapers are prayed over before being shipped, and will be shipped with the Gospel booklets (see Project 2).

Please see below for instructions on assembling and sewing pocket cloth diapers, if you so desire to participate in this ministry by providing your time and talents! If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us!

*Please read through entire directions, and then again each step you are on, to ensure the easiest and most efficient process for yourself.

Step 1:      Gather your materials...

  • PUL (polyurethane laminated fabric; it is waterproof and it is the outer layer)

  • Be careful to choose designs of the fabric that would not offend anyone (please no camo, no American flag designs, no skulls)

  • anti-pill fleece (this is the inside layer that lies against the baby's skin)

  • 100% polyester thread

  • snaps or sew-on Velcro (1") (and the snap-pliers)

  • elastic (1/4")

  • you'll also need flannel or old pajamas or t-shirts to create your inserts/soakers

Step 2:      Cut out your fabric using a pocket diaper pattern. (To use PGD’s pattern, please request it via email) I cut both materials out at the same time, so they perfectly match up. Once cut, mark the spots for the elastic to be sewn into (for around the legs of the baby) on the design/color side (“correct” side) of the PUL, a good inch in with a washable marker or pencil.

*these tools also come in handy during this time: a cutting mat, a rotary cutter and some fabric clips.

Step 3:      *If using snaps: Put the "wrong" side of the PUL up facing you. Place and glue (with fabric glue) a scrap piece of PUL over the diaper (so that it your PUL material is reinforced for the snaps) and then place the snap pattern over the top of that, towards the top/front of the diaper (it would be on the front of the baby). Place the scrap PUL & snap pattern an inch from the top of diaper. Make marks with a pencil and then use your awl to poke holes through the PUL, for the snaps to be placed. Make sure when you are adding your snaps that you put the proper ones in place (to make the diaper smaller or larger).

*If using Velcro: Measure out a piece of sew-on Velcro that will stretch across the diaper. Sew this on. You’ll then need two much smaller pieces of Velcro (with the opposite material so that the Velcro sticks together) to sew on to the tabs at the end of the sewing process (see Step 12).

Step 4:     Clip the material together now, making sure they match up as perfect as you can. You want the design/color side of the PUL, facing in toward the fleece. The anti-pill fleece doesn't usually have a right/wrong side, unless it’s evident.   Do any trimming if necessary. (You are going to be sewing the diaper “inside-out” at first.)

Step 5:     Sew around the whole diaper closing, stopping on either side of the pocket.

Step 6:    Sew the pocket tabs that are on the back of the diaper down, away from each other, horizontally (leaving a gap on each side to run the elastic through).  Be sure not to sew your PUL and fleece together during this time.

Step 7:     Measure your elastic along that same tab, length-wise, without pulling on the elastic. Then cut the elastic exactly in half.

Step 8:     Safety pin your elastic on one end, and run it through the folded over tabs. Sew the elastic in, vertical. Then push the safety pin and elastic through to other side-- this will bunch the fabric, which is what you want. Sew the elastic in on the other side, vertically. Repeat this step on other tab, for the pocket of the diaper. Again, be sure not to sew your PUL and fleece together during this time.

Step 9:     Turn the diaper right-side out, poking out all the tabs and corners, from the inside.

Step 10:    Measure the elastic  for the legs, the same way you did for the pocket tabs. Cut in half. Place the elastic inside the diaper at your elastic mark. Sew in the elastic vertically. Pull the elastic  to the other mark and sew  in that end, vertically. Do the same to the other leg. (You're almost done!)

Step 11:    Sew all the way around the diaper again, making sure you go around the elastic on the legs, hitting the bottom of the vertical stitch on each side of the legs, however. Again, stop at the pocket, and try to sew as close to the edge as you can, with as little as fleece showing (so stretch/flatten out your diaper so all you can see is PUL).

Step 12:    Finally add your snaps (or sew on your Velcro) to the tabs at the other end of the diaper. Again, make sure to put in the correct snaps, so that your diaper can close around the babies waist.
